Testimonials
The South Coast is known as the Golf Coast
Play Golf
Golf Coast
Golf, golf and more golf!
Southbroom Golf Club has many friends and admirers from all over South Africa and the World. It is a course that receives many favourable mentions regularly in golfing magazines.
The Southbroom Golf Course is one of the finest golf courses to be found anywhere in KwaZulu Natal and the views from the course are magnificent with beach and breaker views from the 4th and 5th Tees. The Vervet monkeys are often at play and may also catch your attention (careful, heads up!) as you play around the course. If fortunate, you may also see one of the shy Duikers (particularly along the 17th) that forages along behind the monkeys.
Derek James, the Professional, is the only Pro to have achieved the double Accolade of PGA Pro of the Year and PGA Teaching Pro of the Year. Derek and with his wife Sheena, run the friendliest and best equipped Pro shop along the coast.
The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is commonly referred to as the “Golf Coast”, blessed with nine superb 18-hole Golf Courses.
Five of the Top 50 golf courses in South Africa are situated within a 45 minute drive from Sunbirds B&B.

Information
Location & Nearby Attractions
We are remarkably fortunate to be the best placed accommodation in Southbroom for access to the beach, and have a well known restaurant within walking distance.
Few coastal villages can boast easy access along the full extent of their coastline.
Even fewer can boast that their natural heritage has not given way to high-rise hotels and apartment blocks. Sunbirds B&B is remarkably fortunate to be within close walking distance to the beautiful Umkobi beach and one of the best restaurants within Southbroom.
In addition to this we are within a 10 minute drive from a wide variety of restaurants to suit your mood and palate.
Southbroom enjoys 4 km of sandy Indian Ocean beach frontage and has protected its coastal bush with passion.
Boasting two recognised swimming beaches, the coastal walk between them is truly spectacular thanks to the pristine condition of the primary dunes.
It’s two tidal pools further ensure that the needs of every beachcomber are satisfied.
There are a few rocky outcrops along the way, but they are easily crossed and the little coves that nestle between them are stunning.
The village also boasts a tennis and bowls club and adequate retail facilities for daily needs. More comprehensive shopping is provided by the nearby towns of Ramsgate, Margate and Shelly Beach.
Dolphin / whale watching
Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales appear around the South African coastline from May to December and can often be seen close inshore and near river mouths. Southbroom has many elevated vantage points from which to enjoy the whales. Several coastal dolphin species can be seen throughout the year, especially during the annual sardine run.
Bird watching
Southbroom is a bird lover’s paradise with a myriad of habitats to explore. The South Coast Birding Route comprises of a variety of habitats from coastal and wetland environments to forest, woodland and grassland. Above all it is the forest birding to be had here that is unparalleled.
Southern Africa has two distinct forest avifaunas, namely the Afromontane forests and the rich tropical forest community that extends down the coast. It is only in the region of the South Coast Birding Route that these two diverse forest assemblages overlap and for this reason birding in this area is extremely profitable.
Specials including the northern most population of Knysna Woodpecker and other highly sought after species such as Magpie Mannikin and African Broadbill.
Diving / shark diving
Launching from Shelley Beach, the Protea Banks reef is rated as one of the world’s best shark diving spots. Species encountered on the reef include: Bull (Zambezi), Tiger, Hammerhead, Thresher, Copper, Dusky, Ragged Tooth, Black Tip, and even the odd Mako shark. There is also a variety of reef fish, ribbon tail skates, moray eels, spotted eagle rays, manta rays and large schools of pelagic fish.
Horse riding
A number of operators offer horse trails through the coastal bush or along the beaches, including the Oribi Gorge and overnight trips along the Eastern Cape Wild Coast.
Nature reserves
There are a number of nature reserves in the area offering hiking trails, picnic sites and bird watching. Clear water trails, Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, Oribi Gorge and Lake Eland game reserve to name but a few.
Mountain biking / MTB trails
Mountain bike trails are offered around Port Edward, and adjacent to the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve. Exciting overnight trails are offered into the Wild Coast, just across the Umtamvuna River.
River bend Crocodile Farm
One of the South Coast’s most popular attractions and home to some of South Africa’s the largest crocodiles. The farm also has an enlightening information centre, art gallery and restaurant.
Wild Coast Sun Casino
The Wild Coast Casino has a variety of table games and slot machines tailored to appeal to your preference. The slot machines are operated by secure and efficient smart card technology. Both slots and tables have smoking and non-smoking facilities, and the slots smoking area has a walk-up bar for your convenience. Beverages are served at the Calypso and Coral Bars, situated on the casino floors.
ATMs are situated within the Banking Mall and banking services are also available at the cash desk.
Arts and crafts
Original paintings, hand-crafted pottery, beadwork and jewellery from some of South Africa’s top artists and crafters can be found in the local galleries.
Extreme adventure
The more adventurous can enjoy the exhilaration of abseiling by doing the 101 metre rock face at the Oribi Gorge, the king swing, or white-water rafting!
Lake Eland Game Reserve has pushed the adrenaline boundaries by opening their Zip Extreme, which slides up to 160 km an hour down the side of Oribi Gorge.
This is an exciting alternative to the longest zip line tour in Africa (4.35 km), which crosses Oribi Gorge and a section of the lake via 14 slides, and the 80 m-long suspension bridge over the edge of the gorge.
On your way through the reserve view a variety of birds and game, including wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, endangered oribi, and eland.
